David Mavashev on Dushanbe Roots, Tech, and What Bukhori Still Needs
A Kaykov TV interview aired Aug. 31 and published by BJL on Oct. 7 follows Rego Park tech founder David Mavashev from Dushanbe through Israel to Nastel Technologies—and cultural memory.
Rego Park technology entrepreneur David Mavashev reflected on Soviet childhood, Israeli reinvention, multimillion-dollar negotiations, and the future of Bukhori and Shashmaqam in a Kaykov TV conversation with Roman Kaykov that premiered Aug. 31, 2026, and was adapted for the Bukharian Jewish Link on Oct. 7.
Born in Dushanbe in the 1950s, Mavashev grew up in a home where Bukharian writers and communal figures gathered while he absorbed language, poetry, and melody without formal lessons. His father—Samarkand-born, Torah-trained, and a quiet communal helper—shaped his ear for Shashmaqam after a childhood preference for the Beatles; foreign scholars visiting the family helped change his mind. His father died of ALS in 1978; soon afterward David left the USSR while still attached to the Soviet military, rebuilt life in Israel (including IDF service), and in 1980 moved to New York.
There he built Nastel Technologies around specialized IBM-environment software. He recounted early talks that jumped from a privately hoped-for $500,000 to offers near $5 million that did not close, and later negotiations around $100 million and roughly $150 million that vanished when markets shifted—leading to his blunt lesson: “You should have sold. You can’t be greedy.” Age, he said, changed his measure of success: “Money doesn’t solve anything in the end.”
He worries that Bukhori fades when English or Hebrew becomes the home language, and that Shashmaqam needs the same everyday exposure he once received. Asked what descendants should remember, he offered no manifesto: “I just hope that I have done everything that I was supposed to do.”
